How to create a recurring service

Create a subscription service with one or more billing periods, and set trials, request limits, a setup fee and upgrade paths.

Written by Gabriel Lecointere

Use case

You sell an ongoing service, like a monthly design subscription or a retainer, and want clients to be billed automatically every period. A recurring service is billed as a subscription: monthly, quarterly, yearly or another period you choose.

Create the service

  1. In the sidebar, open Services and click All services. Click Create service.

All services page with the Create service button highlighted
  2. Under Service type, select Recurring and click Next.

Service type step with Recurring selected
  3. Enter the Service name and Description. Clients see both in your catalog and at checkout. You can also upload a Service image (recommended size 390x190 px). Click Next.

Set the price and billing periods

  1. On the Pricing details step, pick how the service is priced:

    • Standard: a set price, and clients send you requests.

    • Time based: includes a set number of Hours in each billing period.

    • Credit based: includes a set number of Credits in each billing period that clients redeem for requests.

See Service pricing configurations for how each type works.

  2. Enter the Price and choose the Recurring period: weekly, monthly, quarterly, biannually or annually.

  3. To offer more than one period, click Add recurring period and set a price for each, for example a monthly and a discounted yearly price. Clients pick one at checkout.

Optional settings

Roll over unused hours or credits

On Time based and Credit based services, turn on Allow unused hours to roll over (or credits) to carry the balance into the next period. Under Rollover settings, choose whether they roll over indefinitely or for a limited number of months.

Trial period

Turn on Enable trial period to give new clients a free or paid trial before the regular price starts. See How to create free or paid trials.

Request limits and setup fee

Under More details:

  • Max concurrent Requests: how many requests a client can have open at once. Leave empty for no limit.

  • Max number of Requests per month: how many requests a client can submit each month. Leave empty for no limit.

  • Charge a setup fee: a one-time fee added to the first payment. Enter the Setup fee amount.

Read more about request limits in How to manage max number of active requests.

Default service

Turn on Make this the default service if every client should be able to use this service, even without buying it. See How to offer services for free.

Upgrade and downgrade paths

Under Upgrade & downgrade paths, choose which other subscriptions clients can switch to from this one in Available services. Turn on Allow billing period changes to let them switch billing periods too (for example monthly to yearly); the list then becomes Available service variations so you can pick specific periods.

Finish

  1. Click Next. On a new service this already saves it as a draft.

  2. Build the Request form clients fill in when they submit a request. See our request form article.

  3. Click Save. The service is published and shows in your catalog.
