Advanced request form fields: internal, repeatable, billable, dropdown

Make request form fields repeatable or billable, add dropdowns and image options, show help text, and how internal fields work.

Written by Gabriel Lecointere

Use case: Your request form needs more than plain questions. You want clients to list several sizes in one field and pay for each extra one, pick from a dropdown, or choose an option by its picture.

This article covers the field options that go beyond the basics: repeatable fields, billable fields, dropdowns, image options and help text. To add fields, reorder them and set up the form in the first place, see How to customize service request forms.

Before you start

  • Open the form: go to Services > All services, open the service, edit it and go to the Request form step.

  • Click a field to select it. Its options appear in the bar at the bottom of the field.

  • Changes to a field's options are saved as soon as you click them.

Repeatable fields

A repeatable field lets clients give several answers of the same kind in one field, for example several sizes, links, dates or phone numbers. You can make these field types repeatable: Short answer, Paragraph, Date and Rich text + image.

  1. Click the field to select it.

  2. Click the repeat icon (two arrows) in the bar at the bottom. It turns green when the field is repeatable.

On the form, clients now see a More button under the field. Each click adds another answer box, and they can remove extra boxes again.

Billable fields

A billable field charges the client for each item they add to a repeatable field. For example, an "Extra size" field on a banner service can charge the service price for every extra size the client lists.

  1. Make the field repeatable first. The billable icon only appears on repeatable fields.

  2. Click the dollar icon in the bar at the bottom of the field. It turns green when the field is billable.

At checkout, the number of items in the billable field sets the quantity, and the client pays the service price for each one. Three sizes means three times the price.

Billable fields only work with one-off services, and only when the form is filled in at checkout. On the service's Pricing details step, keep Require request submission at checkout and Allow quantity selection turned on. With Allow quantity selection off, the checkout refuses more than one item.

Dropdown fields

A Dropdown field shows a list the client picks one answer from. It keeps long lists of options tidy, for example urgency, country or file format.

  1. Click Add item at the bottom of the form and choose Dropdown. To change an existing field, select it and pick Dropdown in the field type menu next to its label.

  2. Type each choice. Click Add option to add more.

  3. Turn on Required if the client must choose an answer.

This is a field on the request form. It is different from the Request custom dropdown in the Requests module settings, which adds one dropdown to every request's details for your team. See How to use custom dropdown.

Image options

Single selection and Multiple selection fields can show each option as a picture card instead of a plain list, which helps when clients choose a style or a format.

  1. Select the field.

  2. Click the image icon in the bar at the bottom (Switch to image selection). It turns green when image options are on.

  3. Each option now shows as a card with a picture and a label. Click Add option to add another card.

Help text

To add a short hint under a field, select it, open the three-dot menu in the field bar and click Show help text. Type the hint under the field. Click Hide help text to remove it.

Internal fields

An internal field is only visible to your team. It isn't shown on the create form or the checkout, and clients don't see it on their requests. In the builder, internal fields have an orange outline.

Internal fields can't be required or billable, and you can't use them in conditions.

Tips

  • Check the layout with Preview at the top of the Request form step. The preview also shows internal fields, which clients don't see.

  • Show fields only when needed with conditions, for example only ask for banner sizes when the client picks "Banner". See How to use conditional rules for your request forms.

  • On a phone or tablet, the image, billable and repeat icons move into the three-dot menu of the field bar as Image options, Billable and Repeatable.

  • Billable or add-on? Use a billable field when the price grows with the number of items the client lists. For fixed extras, like rush delivery, use an add-on instead.
