How to test your client journey safely

Use the built-in test client to see your portal as a client and place a free test order with a test card.

Written by Gabriel Lecointere

Use case: You want to see your portal the way a client sees it, and place a test order, without charging a real card.

Important: Only the built-in test client runs in test mode. Clients you create under Users > Clients, and clients who sign up on your portal, are real clients. If they buy a service, their card is charged through your connected Stripe account.

Your built-in test client

Every portal comes with a test client: John Doe ([email protected]) in the organization ACME Corp. You find them in Users > Clients. Orders placed as this client use Stripe test mode, are free of charge, and their invoices are marked as paid.

Step 1: View your portal as the test client

  1. Go to Users > Clients.

  2. Find John Doe (ACME Corp.) and click the three-dot menu at the end of the row.

  3. Select Impersonate.

  4. You are now viewing the portal as John Doe. A short tour shows you where to return to admin mode: your name at the bottom of the sidebar.

Good to know: on a new portal, the See your client portal step of the getting started checklist does the same thing. Click View as a client and you are impersonating the test client.

Step 2: Place a test order

Before you start, make sure your portal has a payment method. To test card payments, connect Stripe in Settings > Modules and extensions > Billing (see How to integrate Stripe with ManyRequests).

  1. While impersonating the test client, click Services in the sidebar.

  2. Click Purchase on the service you want to test.

  3. The checkout page shows a Test mode. notice, so you know no real payment will be taken.

  4. Fill in the checkout form as a client would. If the service asks for request details first, fill them in and click Next to get to the billing details.

  5. Under Payment method, use the test card shown on the page. Click the card number to copy it, then use any future expiry date and any three-digit CVC.

  6. Click the button at the bottom of the form to finish. It says Pay now, Subscribe or Start trial, depending on the service.

You then see a confirmation page with a Go to dashboard button. The order goes through like a real one, so you can follow what happens next: the invoice, the subscription or request, and the emails.

Step 3: Return to your admin view

  1. Click John Doe at the bottom of the sidebar.

  2. Select Leave impersonation.

FAQ

Can I impersonate my other clients?

Yes. Impersonate is in the row menu of every client, so you can check what a specific client sees. Only the test client is in test mode, though: never use a real client to place test orders.

Can I just create a new client to test with?

We don't recommend it. A client you create yourself, or one who signs up on your portal, is a real account. Their orders are charged.

What if I open a checkout page while logged in as an admin?

You see a Test mode. notice that says your payment won't be processed. To walk through the full client experience, impersonate the test client instead.
