When a client is happy with a delivery, they often want to say thanks. With tips turned on, a client who rates a request 4 or 5 stars is invited to add a tip for your team, right in the review window. They pay with the card they have saved or on a payment page, and you see every paid tip in the Tips report.
Use case: Your client loves the new homepage hero and gives it 5 stars. The review window asks if they want to leave a tip, they add $25 and confirm with their saved card. Your designer gets a "Nice work!" email, and at the end of the month you export the Tips report to share the tips with the team.
What you need before you start
Only portal admins and admins can change these settings. Tips need:
Request reviews turned on. The tip is offered in the review window, so tips only work while clients can leave reviews. See Client reviews on completed requests.
The Billing module turned on in Settings > Modules and extensions (the settings call this the checkout experience).
Stripe connected. See How to integrate Stripe with ManyRequests.
Invoice management turned on (Settings > Modules and extensions > Billing, Invoices tab). It's not required, but while it's off, only clients with a saved card are offered a tip, and they can't pay with another card.
If something is missing, the Tips switch is grayed out and a message in red tells you what to fix: Tips need Stripe connected., Tips need the checkout experience enabled. or Tips need Stripe connected and the checkout experience enabled.
How to turn on tips
Go to Settings > Modules and extensions and click the gear icon next to Requests.
Scroll to Request reviews and make sure it's on. The review options appear under it.
Turn on Tips. If enabled, clients who leave a 4 or 5 star review can add a tip for your team.
If you need to charge tax on tips, turn on Charge tax on tips (see below).
Click Save changes.
Once tips are on, Tips also appears under Reports in the sidebar.
What your client sees
The tip is offered right after the client submits a review of 4 or 5 stars, the first time they review that request. It doesn't matter how they got to the review window: Mark as completed, the Leave a review link in the request activity, or the review reminder email.
The client picks 4 or 5 stars and clicks Submit. The review is saved as usual.
The window shows Leave a tip (optional): Thanks for the kind words! If you want, you can add a tip for the people who did the work. The client types an Amount. Under the field, The minimum is ... shows the smallest amount Stripe accepts in that currency, for example $0.50 USD.
The client clicks Continue. The Confirm your tip step shows the Tip and, if you charge tax on tips, the Taxes and the Total.
The client pays with their saved card or on a payment page (see the next section).
If the client clicks No thanks, no tip is taken and the window moves on as it does after any review. Nothing is charged until the client confirms the amount.
The tip is charged in the currency of the request's service, or in your portal's currency when the request has no service.
Saved card or payment page
When the client has a saved card
The confirmation step says We will charge the card you have saved. and the button names the card, for example Charge $25.00 USD to Visa ••••4242. The card is charged right away and the client sees Thank you for your tip.
To pay with a different card, the client clicks Use another card and goes to the payment page. This link only shows when invoice management is on.
If the saved card is declined or needs an extra check from the bank:
With invoice management on, the client lands on the payment page with the message We could not charge your card: No tip was taken yet. You can pay it below with any card.
With invoice management off, the window shows We could not charge your card and No tip was taken.
When the client has no saved card
The confirmation step says We will take you to a payment page to finish. The client clicks Continue to payment, fills in their billing details and card, and pays. The confirmation page then shows Thank you for your tip, or Your tip was not successful if the payment didn't go through.
Good to know: each tip is a small invoice with one line, for example Tip – #1007 Homepage hero redesign. The client doesn't get a new invoice email for it. Once it's paid, they get your usual payment confirmation email as a receipt.
How to charge tax on tips
Turn on Charge tax on tips under Tips in the Requests settings, then click Save changes. The switch says:
If enabled, tips are charged the same tax rates as your other invoices, on top of the amount the client types. Some countries, such as Germany, the Netherlands and Australia, tax tips the business keeps. Check with your accountant before you turn this on.
On: the tax rates you set up for the client's location are added on top of the tip. The client sees Taxes and the Total before they confirm. See How to set up sales tax.
Off: no tax is added. The client pays exactly the amount they typed, even if they change their billing country on the payment page.
Good to know: whether a tip is taxable depends on your country and on who keeps the tip. ManyRequests doesn't decide this for you, so check with your accountant before you turn this on.
Who is told about a tip
When a tip is paid:
Who | What they get |
Portal admins, and admins who can access invoices | An email, A client left a tip, with the amount, the tax, Stripe's fee, the net amount and who was assigned to the request. In the app: Hannah Brooks left a tip of 25.00 USD on #1007 Homepage hero redesign. |
Team members assigned to the request | An email and an in-app notification: Hey! The client loved #1007 Homepage hero redesign and left a tip 🎉 Nice work! The amount isn't shown. |
The client | Your usual payment confirmation email. |
An admin who is also assigned to the request only gets the admin notification. Everyone can turn these off in their Notification preferences: A client left a tip is under Billing notifications, and A client left a tip on an assigned request is under Requests notifications. See How notifications work and how to edit your notification settings.
The paid tip also shows in the request activity, for example Hannah Brooks left a tip of $25.00 with a View invoice link. Clients and admins see it. Team members don't.
How to see your tips in the Tips report
In the sidebar, go to Reports > Tips.
Pick a date range at the top right. The report opens on the past month and lists the tips paid in that period.
The Paid tips table shows:
Request, Client and Organization: which request was tipped and by whom. Click the request to open it.
Invoice number: the tip's invoice.
Total: what the client paid, tax included. Tax: the tax part of it.
Stripe fee and Net amount: Stripe's fee, and what you keep after the fee and the tax. Both are in the currency Stripe pays you out in.
Paid date and Assigned to: when the tip was paid, and who was assigned to the request at that moment.
Click Export CSV to download the list as tips.csv. The file has the same information, with the Tip currency and the Settlement currency (the payout currency) in their own columns. The export follows the dates you picked. Until you pick dates, it includes every paid tip.
The Tips report is for portal admins, and for admins with the Invoices permission (Settings > Modules and extensions > Users, under Admins). Team members and clients can't open it. It only shows while tips are turned on.
What happens to unpaid tips
If a client goes to the payment page and leaves without paying, the tip stays as a pending invoice, so they can still pay it. After 7 days, ManyRequests deletes unpaid tip invoices automatically, so they don't stay in the client's invoices looking like a bill they owe.
A deleted tip isn't offered again on that request.
FAQ
Does the tip go straight to my team member?
No. Tips are paid into your Stripe account, like any other payment. Use the Tips report to see who was assigned to each tipped request and share the tips with your team.
Can a client tip more than once on the same request?
No. Each request can get one tip.
Why wasn't my client offered a tip?
Check that:
Request reviews and Tips are on, the Billing module is on and Stripe is connected.
The rating was 4 or 5 stars.
It was the client's first review of that request. Editing an existing review doesn't offer a tip.
The request doesn't already have a tip, paid or not.
If invoice management is off, the client has a saved card.
If the client clicks Skip instead of reviewing, they can still review later from the request activity and get the tip offer then. If they click No thanks, the offer doesn't come back for that request.
What is the minimum tip?
The smallest amount Stripe accepts in the tip's currency, for example 0.50 USD, 0.50 EUR or 0.30 GBP. The review window shows it under the amount field.
Do tips count as sales in my affiliate or email marketing tools?
No. Tips aren't sent to Rewardful, Tapfiliate or Mailchimp as purchases.
What if I mark a tip invoice as paid by hand?
It's recorded as a paid tip and your team is notified, but there is no Stripe fee to show, so the net amount is the tip itself.
What happens if I turn tips off?
Clients are no longer offered a tip, and the Tips report is hidden. Tips that were already paid stay recorded, and the report shows them again when you turn tips back on.
