How to enable a self sign up page

Let potential clients create a free account on your portal, show your service agreement, and see what happens when someone signs up.

Use case

Your clients usually get an account by buying a service or being invited by an admin. If you'd rather let potential clients create a free account on their own, without buying anything first, turn on the sign up page.

How to enable the sign up page

  1. In the left sidebar, go to Settings > Portal.

  2. Click the Advanced tab at the top.

  3. Scroll down to Sign up page and turn the toggle on.

  4. Click Save changes.

Clients can now create an account at /register on your portal address, for example app.example.com/register.

Show a link to your service agreement

You can show a link to your terms on the sign up page:

  1. On the same Advanced tab, turn on Display link to service agreement.

  2. Enter the URL under Link to service agreement.

  3. Under Link text, enter the text clients see, for example "Terms of service".

  4. Click Save changes.

If you turn the link on but leave Link text empty, the link reads "By submitting this form you agree to our terms of service." The same link also shows on your checkout pages.

What happens when a client signs up

  • The new user gets the client role and their own organization, named after them (for example "Jane's Organization"). You can rename it or move them later. See How to change client organization.

  • They are logged in right away and land on their dashboard. We also send them an email to verify their address.

  • Portal admins and admins get a new client notification in the app.

  • No invitation email is sent, because the client already chose a password.

  • Each email address can only sign up once. If someone already has an account, they should use Already registered? to log in.

Track where sign-ups come from

Add ?ref= and a label to your sign up link, for example app.example.com/register?ref=newsletter. When someone signs up through that link, the label is saved as a ref property on their organization. You'll find it under Properties in the right-side panel of the organization's details page.

Tip: To close sign-ups again, turn the Sign up page toggle off. The /register page then stops working, and existing accounts are not affected.
