How to embed a Looker Studio report in your portal

Show a Looker Studio (Google Data Studio) report to all clients or a different report to each organization with the extension.

Written by Gabriel Lecointere

You can show a Looker Studio report (formerly Google Data Studio) inside your portal with the Google Data Studio | Looker Studio extension. The report opens as a page in the Extensions section of the sidebar, so clients see their results without leaving the portal.

Use case: you run ads for your clients and track results in Looker Studio. You embed each client's report as a Monthly report page, so they can check performance whenever they log in instead of waiting for a PDF.

Before you start: get the embed URL from Looker Studio

  1. Open the report in Looker Studio.

  2. Turn on embedding for the report (in Looker Studio: File > Embed report, then Enable embedding).

  3. Copy the Embed URL. It starts with https://lookerstudio.google.com/embed/ (older reports may use datastudio.google.com).

  4. Check who can view the report in Looker Studio's sharing settings. People who don't have access see a Google sign-in message instead of the report.

Step 1: Add the extension

  1. Go to Settings > Modules and extensions, open the Extensions tab and click Add extensions.

Add extensions button on the Extensions tab
  2. Select Google Data Studio | Looker Studio (you can search or filter by Dashboards) and click Next.

  3. Choose who the report is for, then click Next:

    • For organizations (global): the same report for all clients across all organizations.

    • For each organization (local): a different report for each organization. Use this when every client has their own report.

    • The two For your team options show the report to your team members and admins instead of clients.

  4. Fill in the details:

    • Icon (optional): the image shown next to the link in the sidebar.

    • Label: the name of the link in the sidebar, for example "Monthly report".

    • Code snippet (global extensions only): paste the embed URL. Only lookerstudio.google.com and datastudio.google.com links are accepted.

Fill extension details step with the Label and Code snippet fields
  5. Click Create extension.

If you chose a global extension, you're done: the report is now in your clients' sidebar.

Step 2 (local extensions): connect each organization

  1. On the Extensions tab, click the settings (gear) icon next to your extension. The Organizations list shows every organization.

  2. Click Connect next to an organization.

  3. Paste that client's embed URL in Code snippet and click Save changes.

Configure extension page with the Code snippet field for one organization
  4. Repeat for each organization. Organizations you haven't connected don't see the extension.

What your clients see

Clients find the report under Extensions in the sidebar, with the label you chose. Clicking it opens the report inside the portal.

Tips and FAQ

Clients see a Google sign-in message instead of the report. Why?

The report isn't shared with them in Looker Studio, or embedding isn't turned on. Check the report's sharing and embed settings in Looker Studio.

Can I use one report that filters itself per client?

Yes, if your report accepts URL parameters. In the URL you can use {{email}}, {{name}} and {{ref}}, which are replaced with the viewer's email, name and organization reference. The organization reference is the organization's ref property: it's filled in when a client signs up through a link with ?ref=, or you can add it yourself with Add property (label "ref") in the organization's Properties. If an organization has no ref, {{ref}} is left empty. Read more in Add more functionality to your portal with extensions.

Can I embed other tools the same way?

Yes. The extension catalog also includes Airtable, Google Sheets, ClickUp, Monday.com, Typeform, Calendly and more, plus Custom Iframe and External link. See Add more functionality to your portal with extensions.
