Why am I not receiving notifications?

A checklist to find out why an email, in-app, push or Slack notification didn't reach you.

Written by Gabriel Lecointere

Not getting an email or in-app notification you expected? Most of the time it's a turned-off setting, or you aren't connected to the request. Work through this checklist.

Use case: a client comments on a request, but your designer never hears about it. The designer isn't assigned to the request, so ManyRequests doesn't notify them. Adding them as an account manager for that client fixes it for every new request.

1. Check your notification preferences

  1. Go to Settings > Profile and account and open the Notification preferences tab. You can also get there from your avatar menu at the bottom left: Your profile.

  2. Each notification has two switches: Email and In app. Make sure the one you're missing is on. Notifications are grouped under Requests notifications and Billing notifications.

  3. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page.

Good to know:

  • The list depends on your role. For example, on your team only admins get New service request when a client submits a request. Team members hear about new requests through New assigned request.

  • Time pending approval only appears if you can approve time entries.

  • Billing notifications are hidden when the portal's checkout is turned off.

  • Settings are personal. Changing yours doesn't affect your teammates or your clients.

2. Check that you're connected to the request

Comment and update notifications only go to the people connected to a request:

  • Team members are notified about requests they're assigned to. Open the request and look at Assigned to in the summary on the right.

  • Clients are notified about requests they created or follow (Following on the request).

  • Mentions: if someone @mentions you in a comment, you're notified even if you aren't assigned.

  • Internal comments never notify clients.

Tip: to be assigned to every new request from a client automatically, add yourself as Account manager on their organization: go to Users > Clients, open the Organizations tab, open the organization and use Account manager in the right-hand panel. This applies to new requests, not existing ones. Read more in How to auto-assign team members to clients' requests.

3. Why a comment email may not arrive

ManyRequests holds back some comment emails on purpose, so your inbox isn't flooded:

  • You already saw it. Comment emails go out about 15 seconds after the comment is posted. If you read the notification in the app before then, no email is sent.

  • Several comments in a row. If another comment was posted on the same request in the 2 minutes before, no separate email is sent for the new one. You still see every comment in the app.

  • Your own actions. You're never notified about something you did yourself.

  • Queued requests. A request that goes into the queue doesn't trigger a new request notification.

4. Check your in-app notifications

Click the bell at the top right to see your recent notifications, or open the full list. Use the All, From team and From clients tabs to filter, and Mark all as read to clear them.

Browser push notifications use the same In app setting. Your browser must allow notifications for your portal. They aren't available in Safari or on iPhone and iPad.

5. Check Slack

If you get notifications in Slack, check Settings > Integrations > Slack. The page shows whether Slack is connected and has its own Notification preferences. Use Test connection to send a test message. If Slack keeps rejecting messages, the integration turns itself off and shows a warning on this page. Read more in How to set up Slack integration.

Slack is available on the Pro and Core plans.

6. Check email delivery

  • Look in your spam or junk folder, and add the sender address to your contacts.

  • If you send emails from your own domain, check that it's verified in Settings > Portal > Advanced > Custom email domain.

  • Check the email address on your profile in Profile information.

Still nothing?

Send a test: create a test request or comment from another account and see whether the notification arrives. If it still doesn't, contact us through the live chat with the request and the time it happened, and we'll check whether the email was sent.
