Use case
You need to charge sales tax, GST or VAT to clients in certain countries or states. Set up a tax rule once and ManyRequests adds it at checkout and on the invoice, based on the client's billing address.
Create a tax rule
In the sidebar, open Settings and click Modules and extensions. Click Billing.
On the Payments tab, scroll down to Taxes and click Sales tax.
Click Create tax.
Fill in the details:
Tax name: the name shown on invoices, for example GST or VAT.
Tax rate: the percentage added to the total.
Countries: the countries the tax applies to.
States/Provinces: appears when a country you chose has states or provinces. All of them are ticked when you add the country. To limit the tax to some of them, click Deselect all and tick the ones where the tax applies. Select all ticks them all again. If no state or province is selected, the tax applies to the whole country.
Click Save changes.
To change or remove a tax later, click the three dots on its row and choose Edit or Delete.
How taxes are applied
When a client enters their billing country (and state or province), ManyRequests looks for tax rules that match:
A rule for the whole country matches every client in that country.
A rule limited to some states or provinces matches only clients in those states.
If several rules match, their rates add up and show as one Taxes line. For example, a 5% country tax and a 3% state tax show as Taxes (8%).
Clients in countries without a rule pay no tax.
The tax shows in the order summary at checkout, and on the invoice.
This works for service checkout, top-up checkout and add-on checkout.
Ask for the full address and tax number
Some invoices need the client's full address and company tax number.
In Settings > Modules and extensions > Billing, open the Invoices tab.
Turn on Require full address at checkout.
Click Save changes.
Clients then enter their street address, PO Box, city, country, state and postal code at checkout. When they tick I'm purchasing for a company., they can add their Company name and Tax code.
When the switch is off, checkout only asks for the country. If you have a tax limited to certain states of that country, checkout also asks for the state, so the right tax still applies.
Good to know: your own business details for invoices (Invoice from:, Tax code and address) are under Billing information on the same Invoices tab.
