Use case: The person who signed up for a client account is leaving the company, or someone else now runs the relationship with you. You make another member of the organization its owner, so they can manage the team on the client side.
Every organization has one owner. Only admins and portal admins can change it.
Change the organization owner
In the sidebar, go to Users > Clients.
Click the name of the member who should become the owner. Their organization opens on the Members tab, with the member's details on the right.
In the member's details, click the three-dot menu and select Upgrade to organization owner.
The change is immediate (there is no confirmation step) and you see the message "Organization owner updated." The new owner is shown next to Owner: under the organization name.
You can also start from Users > Clients > Organizations: open the organization, go to the Members tab and click the member's name.
What changes for the old and the new owner
The previous owner stays in the organization as a regular member. Nothing else about their account changes.
The new owner gets Organization in their sidebar, where they can add, edit and remove the organization's members.
The owner always sees all of the organization's requests, even if you turned off Access all requests for clients in Settings > Modules and extensions > Users.
The owner is the one who can connect the organization to Slack from their profile, when Slack is available on your portal.
Invoices you create from the organization's Invoices tab are addressed to the owner.
Good to know: access to invoices and billing is not tied to ownership. It follows your client permissions in Settings > Modules and extensions > Users (for example Access invoices), which apply to every client.
FAQ
What happens if I move the owner to another organization?
If you use Change organization on the owner, another member of the old organization becomes its owner. If there is no other member, the old organization is deleted.
Can a client change the owner themselves?
No. Only admins and portal admins see Upgrade to organization owner.
