📌 Use Case

You’ve set up a trial period on one of your recurring services and want to understand exactly how it works from the client’s perspective– when they get charged, what happens after the trial ends, and whether they need to do anything to continue or cancel.

Note: Trial periods are only available for accounts connected to Stripe. This option is not available for manual payment setups.

What Clients See at Checkout

When a client signs up for a service with a trial period, the checkout page shows two separate amounts:

  • The trial charge - the amount due today to start the trial

  • Future payments - the full subscription price and the date it starts

For example, a client signing up for a 14-day trial at $150 due today, with their regular weekly subscription of $200 starting automatically after the trial ends.

The client enters their payment details and clicks Subscribe to confirm. Payment for the trial is processed immediately at signup.

When Does the Billing Cycle Starts?

The trial period does not count as part of the regular subscription billing cycle. The client’s full subscription billing begins automatically at the end of the trial period– on the date shown under Future payments on the checkout page.

For example, if a client starts a 14-day trial on August 27, their first full subscription payment will be processed on September 10.

Is It Opt-In or Opt-Out After the Trial?

The subscription is opt-out. When a client signs up for a trial, they are automatically enrolled in the full subscription at the end of the trial period. They do not need to take any action to continue– the regular billing starts automatically.

If a client does not want to continue after the trial, they need to cancel their subscription before the trial period ends to avoid being charged the full subscription price.

What Happens With a Free Trial?

For free trials, the trial charge at checkout is $0. The client still enters their payment details at signup. Their first payment– the full subscription price– is processed automatically when the free trial ends.
